The demand for 3d printed models are increasing day by day in the medical field as surgeons prefer to refer the 3dprinted model for complicated surgeries. In recent times we have seen many such surgeries right from plastic surgeries to bone replacements, brain surgeries and many more. Now doctors from China have 3d printed liver to do a surgery.
Mr. Wu, who suffered from liver cancer has to be operated to remove the large size tumor (4.17 X 4.60 X 4.88 in inches) in his right hepatic lobe area. The worst part is that the tumor was connected to the hepatic portal vein and smaller venous branches.
As the tumor twisted together with the veins, it made impossible for the surgeons to operate thus decided to take CT scans. If 3d printing technology was not there for Mr. Wu,it would have become a life threatening issue for him, either the surgery would have damaged the liver as 70% of the organ has to be removed, thus might end in liver failure, or the doctors would have let him go to his home without any surgery which will eventually lead to early death.
The CT scan of Wu’s liver, veins, and the dreadful tumor, which then converted into .stl file to take detailed prints of those parts helped doctors to operate Mr.Wu’s liver tumor successfully just by removing 40% of the liver where the tumor existed.
The 3d printing has helped doctors to prepare for surgeries, and this will also help the future doctors learn better to operate many complicated surgeries easily thus saving many lives.
