Dad creates an Animated Cake with the help of 3D printed parts

3D printing is a tool that is giving rise to a new generation of Makers, thinkers and tinkers, these new age designers are not satisfied with doing things normally. They want to add spice to even the simplest things in like, an animated cake is the perfect example of what I have to explain.

ANIMATED CAKE? What on earth is that!? I can visualize the thousands of blank faces who would have read this article, I don’t blame you because this was really unheard off by me as well till today. But then most of the things I report about 3d printing is really unheard off till now, 3D printing is no more just a way of production it’s slowly becoming a way of expression.

When a Father and Mother duo faced the challenge of getting the perfect cake for their son’s birthday party, they decided to use the all new use of 3D printing to express their love for their son. The Father here was a Youtuber Russell Munro (AKA ‘Russellmunro’) and his wife who made a customized Transformers-themed transforming birthday cake starring none other than Optimus Prime himself.

The electronics and robotics used to make a dumb cake transform into the greatest present ever, were pretty simple to make but the idea should be given all the credit. 3D printing just facilitated in the making of the three separate 3D printed supports for the cake which were made using FDM 3D printer.

Mr. Munro, also added the Optimus Prime voice over to add the realism to the whole experience. He may not have added the assembly instructions on his YouTube channel but the whole mechanism looks pretty simple to replicate by any Robotic DIY enthusiast.

The expression on the face of the birthday boy and the other kids around the cake when it transformed to become Optimus Prime was no less than priceless.

I am sure this small experiment of combining cakemaking with electronics done by Russell Munro will inspire a lot Cake designers all across the globe, he just spiced up the Sweet Street with a fresh Idea.
