Love MakerBot, I love my Rep 2 and was hoping to have the same experience here, but there are reasons that I can't get too excited about this scanner. I'm a 2D computer professional, and thought that buying this scanner would lift the burden of learning CAD programs, but I think that the later will happen long before the former.

I was hoping to scan some small broken household parts and fix and print replacements, but that seems like a farfetched idea.

It has limitations, I thought the size limitations would be restrictions for objects that are too large or heavy, but it really doesn't like small objects, or dark objects, or shiny objects....

I've bought developers spray, hope that will help, but I think that its biggest limitations can be fixed with software updates. I understand that the multi-scan has helped, but I'm still waiting for the software that makes this lose its "experimental" status.

In about nine minutes, the Digitizer generates a good 3D model of your object. The system interpolates missing data, with different results, but is quick. You want to position your object in the best way to let the laser get all details. The software is intuitive and has an excellent interface that makes the Digitizer easy to use also for non-engineers. Once you learn how to do it, it becomes fun. Very good for spare parts.

Within a short time after opening the box, I made my first good scan. The key for a good scan is to have a non-reflective surface!! A few days before receiving the digitizer, I spray painted my items that I was going to scan with a flat ivory color. I've been getting perfect scans each time!

At least I think it is. As my new computer has Windows ver. 8.1 I haven't been able to use this $1400 unit yet as it requires software and MakerBot doesn't have an installer available yet for Windows 8.1. A message on attempting to install the required software says one will be available soon.

The unit looks all right but has some limitations that aren't intuitively apparent on purchase. The manual says it cannot scan objects under about 2 inches by 2 inches and it requires a certain lighting setup to work well. None of these things seem disabling but I'll just have to find out sometime in the future when the software is available. I am excited to explore its possibilities when I am able to get it running.
