A 42-year-old Ricky Ma has created the most impressive and stunning 3D printing project of the year. Ricky Ma is a graphic and product designer form Hong Kong. He has designed and created an extremely 3D printed humanoid robot that is a real time replica of Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson. With no prior experience with robotics, electronic engineering or programming he started the project of the humanoid robot in which 70% of the parts are 3D printed. He spent almost more than $50,000 and a year and half of his time to bring this childhood dream project to a reality. His 3D printed female robot prototype is known as Mark 1.
Mark 1 is a real rife sized robot it has strawberry blonde hair and is set to respond to various programmed verbal commands by talking and giving realistic facial expression like raising eye brows, giving a smile, or winking an eye. The Mark 1 can also move her legs, arms, legs and fingers, also turning the head and bowing down. The life size robotic model is one that looks very amazing and is one of the great projects of 3D printing technology till date.
The humanoid robot consists of a 3D printed skeleton covered with silicone skin that is mostly important in hiding her internal mechanics. To finish the look Ma dresses the robot in a very trendy crop top and skirt with realistic makeup that makes it look more like Scarlett Johansson with fuller lips, eyebrows and the hazel colored eyes.
The final product is a very impressive model with the realistic look. Ma spend his childhood in obsession of robots from movies and cartoons dreaming of building one of his own some day. He never knew of anyone that had knowledge of robotics programming or either engineering nor did he himself pursue any technical or formal degree in robotic engineering. But with his eagerness and will power he learnt all this by himself to create his dream project.
However Ma created the humanoid robot from scratch, learning all the technical skills from a book going through many trials and errors. Some trouble he went across were like the electric motors burnt out, the model continuously toppled over but he crossed all of these obstacles finally expertised him in the robotics, technology, 3D printing and 3D modelling technology.
“During this process, a lot of people would say things like, ‘Are you stupid? This takes a lot of money. Do you even know how to do it?’” said Ma. However, he refused to quit. “I figured I should just do it when the timing is right and realise my dream. If I realise my dream, I will have no regrets in life."
With his dream project now Ma is looking for investors to buy his $50,000 Scarlett Johansson replica in order to create capital for his further models. He is also planning to write a book about this whole experience that he had while creating his dream project and encourage more enthusiasts like him to pursue their dreams.
He has portrayed with his dream project the story of a man's determination and enthusiasm to make his dream a reality, overcoming all the odds. Scarlett Johansson is not new to these science fiction roles, she’s starred as an AI construct in Her, a genetically-modified superhuman warrior in Lucy, and of course, as ass-kicking superhero Black Widow in The Avengers. With many others 3D technology has inspired Ricky Ma to fulfill his dream and his creation will inspire many more.
