3D Printing as an industry got its wings in 2009 because of the ground breaking work of reprap core developer Josef Pr?ša (Now do you realize why you see the name Prusa before most of the reprap printers). There have been hundreds of companies which have made handsome money by creating and selling 3d printer that takes advantage of the work done by Josef Pr?ša. The Open source nature of his work made 3d printing technology accessible to the common man.
One such company which is using his research is Wanhao, a Chinese manufacturer which has made its name in the international market for making reliable and high quality 3d printers. Wanhao Duplicator i3 which launched around this time - last year, made waves in the lower end segment of the 3D Printing market for being the most robust 3d printer and offering the best price to performance ratio.
The company seems to have done it again with their latest offering which is Wanhao Duplicator i3 V2.1 Wanhao may not have smartly named the product, but it’s a real a winner. The open source nature of the printer means that you can grow with the printer and modify it when you a feel something can make the printer work better.
Like its predecessor the v2.1 comes as a completely Pre calibrated and assembled unit made of high quality steel frame design with a metal carriage makes the printer heavy but gives it the much needed stability. The heavy frame ensures the printer does not have a lot of vibrations during printing.
What’s new with the v2.1 is the addition of the MK10 Single-Extruder with Steel X-Carriage. The new extruder is the most important upgrade over the previous versions as the new extruder is capable of extruding almost any filament you prefer, PLA, ABS, PETG, take your pick.
That’s not what’s only changed, the Wanhao Duplicator i3 V2.1 now comes with a standalone fan-cooled electronics housing and a custom filament holder, it also includes an additional filament holder attachment point which lies on top of the printer frame.
The standalone nature of the power supply eliminates any chances of electromagnetic interference. It also has a heated build plate, USB connection, SD card reader which makes the printer work offline and a larger and brighter LCD screen. The company has also given heed to customer complains about the wing screws used for bed leveeing, V2 now has Thumb Screws which makes it easier to get the right bed position for seamless 3d printing.
The V2.1 comes with an all new Wanhao Adhesive Sheet which works pretty well with both ABS and PLA. The company has also added the all new CNC drag Chain (which I have never seen on lower end reprap printers.) The Drag chain keeps the wires well organized which translates to lesser headache while working on the printer.
On the electronic side the printer has a New Melzi mainboard (new stepper motor cables/connectors) and also has a Temperature Fluctuation Cable installed to maintain stable temperature while printing.
There are many other minor changes to the original design which would make the new V2 work better, the details of the same can be seen on the images below.
I am sure you would have been already impressed with the minute design changes that the company has worked over, it just gives me the impression that Wanhao wants to makes 3D Printing easier for its customer and is receptive to the complains they got about their older printers.
